A native and lifelong resident of Wyoming, Foster Claytor was a cowhand and an outstanding rodeo rider from his teens into his twenties – and won the All-Around Cowboy prize at the 1919 Casper Rodeo. The photographer captured him beautifully here, the mount kicking up dust as he springs across the arena, Claytor raised up off the saddle, tie flying, on his way to winning the diamond ring for saddle bronc riding at Rawlins.
Wait a minute. “Tie flying”!? Claytor surely was one of the most spiffily dressed cowboys on the circuit. You don’t see that anymore.
