Krakow's Museum of Modern Art

Krakow, Poland’s capital of culture, lacked a museum of
modern art till the second decade of the 21st century. Presumed
conservatism of the place, best known for its historical monuments,
isn’t a sufficient explanation as the city has always been home to
the country’s leading avant-garde artists and movements as well.
Anyway, this glaring defect was remedied in May 2011 with the
			launching of MOCAK
(Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow), a brand-new concrete
and glass complex of minimalist pavilions on the former grounds of
Emalia plant a.k.a. Schindler’s Factory. The architecture was
			designed by Italy’s Claudio Nardi.

The museum’s own collection is still embryonic. It consists of
miscellaneous works by Polish and foreign artists that date from the
late 20th century through recent times. The world’s greatest names
may be missing from the permanent exhibition but it gives a glimpse
into the trends cherished by art critics over the last thirty years,
			notably in Poland.
Featured artists include Tomasz Bajer, Tymek Borowski, Edward
Dwurnik, Leopold Kessler, Kristof Kintera, Ragnar Kjartansson,
Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Robert Kusmirowski, Lars Laumann, Norman Leto,
Piotr Lutynski, Malgorzata Markiewicz, Bartek Materka, Maria
Michalowska, Jozef Robakowski, Maria Stangret, Beat Streuli, Pawel
Susid, Marian Warzecha, and Krzysztof Wodiczko.

As most its counterparts worldwide these days, Krakow’s Museum of
Contemporary Art concentrates on temporary shows in the first place.
Its curators seem to favor photography, video, and installations,
preferably executed with a conceptual angle and carrying an inherent
			political and/or social statement.

MOCAK shares its address with popular
Oskar Schindler’s Museum situated next to it. Both
operate on the premises of former enamelware factory immortalized in
Steven Spielberg’s movie ‘Schindler’s List’. The latter
operates in the adapted office building while MOCAK has replaced the
workshops. Their site at 4 Lipowa street is surrounded by Krakow’s
traditional industrial district, Zablocie, on the right bank of
			Wisla river.
