This Dakota Sioux was a companion of Sitting Bull as a young man, and an ally of Crazy Horse during the Plains Indian Wars. In 1866, U.S. Cavalry Captain William Fetterman set out to prove his claim that he could ride safely across Indian-occupied territory with eighty men. Cheyenne and Sioux warriors wiped the company out – and maneuvers devised by Thunderhawk are generally credited as playing a large role in the battle. He survived the wars to become the dominant leader of the Reservation Hunkpapa.
