As a young man, Mad Bear was a member of the Sioux “Fool Soldier Band”. Later he became chief of a band of his people, the Yanktonais, living in the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Like many prominent chiefs, he acclimated to White civilization and died in 1915 at 80 years.
