“Chet knows more about roping than any man in the world,” said Will Rogers in the forward he wrote for Byers’ 1928 book on the subject. Byers worked in the Pawnee Bill Wild West Show and the Miller Brothers’ 101 Ranch Wild West before becoming a full-time rodeo competitor. He was the World Champion Roper in 1915 and 1916 and won every Trick & Fancy Roping Contest at the Madison Square Garden rodeos until the event was dropped in 1932. He is in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
