Born Edward Cochran, the future Rodeo Hall-of-Famer would become “Ralph Russell Doubleday” around 1910. He might have worked for the Miller Brothers’ 101 Ranch in 1912, when his photo of Yakima Canutt on “South Dakota” was used on a 101 Ranch Store token. Over the next 40 years he would take many thousands of rodeo images and be cited by the likes of Will Rogers and Foghorn Clancy as the sport’s preeminent photographer.
Most everything else about his life is cloaked in mystery and few photos of the man himself exist. Only one that we know of – this one – shows him posed with any of the performers he chronicled.
