Believed to have been born around 1840 in the Garden of the Gods, as “Sapiah”. He was chosen by Chief Ouray in 1880 to succeed him as chief of the Southern Ute. He was the last traditional chief of this tribe.

Sapiah became fluent in English, took a whiteman’s name, and impressed a long line of U.S. officials – including Teddy Roosevelt, who he took hunting in the Gallatin Valley of Montana. But his prime purpose was always the preservation of Ute customs and language, and he succeeded. He died in 1936.
