The light-colored structure rising above the darkest buildings in the far background is the Alamo, in this peaceful view of the San Antonio River (the title seems misleading today). This is one in a series of four engravings created in the 1870’s by an artist accompanying a reporter for Harper’s on a tour of Texas. We’ve enhanced them only very slightly and left the original titles in the lower margin, just as we found them. The detail is amazing and offers a realistic view of life in the state and in the West of the time.
