This photograph of a cowboy foursome at gallop was taken in 1911. The cowboys are part of the Miller Brothers’ 101 Wild West Show touring England (note the Indians awaiting their turn in the background and the huge painted backdrop behind them all). Wild West shows thrilled audiences for over 40 years and played no small role in building western myths, along with sustaining the American public’s fascination with western legend and lore – and paving the way for western-themed movies, books and television shows that dominated the first half of the century.
