This isn’t the “Buckskin Bill” of recent Idaho fame (Sylvan Ambrose Hart), the last of the mountain men, and icon of self-reliance. It’s probably not “Buckskin Bill” (William Karl) who ran with the notorious Bummers Gang near Denver in the mid-1800’s. It could be the “Buckskin Bill” who guided the U.S. Army into the Black Hills in 1876 to check out the Sioux, or the mule-master “Buckskin Bill” who accompanied several of John Muir’s expeditions.
It might well be a representation of the character created by and about “Buckskin Bill” (Charles Randolph), in popular turn-of-the-century dime novels, or it could, by a stretch, be the leader of the not wildly successful and mostly forgotten “Buckskin Bill’s Historical Wild West.”
Let’s just say it’s an amalgamation of these adventurers and fearless men of the West, and celebrate them all!
